Common Car Maintenance Mistakes

There is a lot more to car maintenance than most people put into it; let’s explore some of the most common car maintenance mistakes drivers make when it comes to maintaining their vehicles and what to do about it.

Mistake #1: Not inspecting your brakes regularly.

It is very important to get your brakes looked at by an experienced car mechanic the moment you hear any strange squeaking noise coming out of the brake pads. Many car owners simply ignore that; thinking it’s not really a big deal. That’s a big mistake – you are putting your own safety at risk. Not changing the brake pads regularly could result in the brakes wearing down over time.

Car MaintenanceMistake #2: Failing to examine the tire pressure regularly.

Do you check the tire pressure on your vehicle? If not, you could be making a big mistake. Ensuring that the tires are properly inflated is not just about preventing flat tires; it’s also about increasing the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. When the tires are under-inflated, the car consumes more fuel than it should. Regular tire rotation is another thing you should focus on.

Mistake #3: Ignoring oil changes.

Newer cars don’t really require oil changes as often as some of the older models. This is not to say that they don’t need oil changes at all. They do, but once every 10,000 km, while older cars need oil changes every 5,000 km. Failing to do the oil change would be a big mistake as that could damage your engine significantly if neglected for long enough.

Car MaintenanceMistake #4: Not replacing air filters.

Air filters need to be changed every now and then. If not, they can get clogged with dirt or dust, and affect the air flow to the engine – this is especially true in our dusty climate. That is not a good thing as that affects the fuel efficiency of the car and leads to all sorts of problems with the engine.

Mistake #5: Failing to check all fluids.

There are so many fluids you should be checking on a regular basis – brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid and more. Not doing so could cause expensive damages to the engine and the transmission system if you were to run out of a necessary fluid and not notice.

Car MaintenanceMistake #6: Leaving everything to the mechanic.

As much as you may love your mechanic and rely on them for every little thing, it if still important to know the basics of car maintenance, simple things such as changing a flat tire or jump starting the car in cold weather.

These are just a few of the basics that you should be able to do on your own. But there are many who cannot handle such tasks – seniors, for example. In that case, there is nothing wrong in calling the car mechanic for even the most minor repair and maintenance work – they are only there to help. Having a roadside assistance service for times like this can be especially helpful as well!
